Well the thing is that on the first run there's plenty of choice, then your voice is silenced automatically by the majority because the party you vote for purely for ideals usually doesn't make it on to the second round, so by that point you're left with two or three candidates, and if it's not the one that you care about, then it doesn't matter anymore.
